ÖVP calls for relocation of Josefstadt prison after staff protests
The ÖVP Josefstadt has called for the gradual relocation of the Josefstadt prison following protests by approximately one hundred prison staff members. The employees demonstrated to highlight what they described as unsustainable working conditions, specifically citing severe overcrowding and a lack of personnel.
Adam Christian, the district party chairman for the ÖVP, stated that the Ministry of Justice must act to prevent a collapse of the facility. He proposed the creation of an interdisciplinary working group involving the Ministry of Justice, the City of Vienna, and the district to address the issue. The facility is currently undergoing renovations while remaining in operation, and the ÖVP noted that the prison is located in a densely populated residential area within Vienna's smallest district.
