Vietnam stock market upgraded to FTSE Russell emerging market status
Vietnam's stock market has officially transitioned from a frontier market to a secondary emerging market status according to the FTSE Russell classification, effective September 21, 2026. This milestone is expected to significantly increase international capital access, with FiinGroup estimating a potential inflow of approximately $6 billion.
In the initial trading sessions following the upgrade, market reactions were mixed. While the VN-Index saw gains, foreign investors recorded net selling on several major exchanges, including HoSE. Specifically, on September 21, foreign investors net sold over 676 billion VND across three exchanges, focusing on large-cap stocks like VHM, VIC, and FPT. However, individual stocks like VPBank (VPB) showed resilience, with shares rising 3.64% amid strong liquidity and net buying from foreign investors.
Experts note that while the upgrade places Vietnam on the radar of larger global investors, converting this recognition into sustained, long-term capital will require improved market quality, transparency, and investment performance. Passive funds are expected to begin allocations based on the FTSE Global Equity Index Series, with initial net purchases estimated by SSI Securities to be around $240.49 million.
