VPN functionality and limitations in online privacy and security
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) serve to protect internet connections, enhance online privacy, and allow access to geographically restricted content by creating an encrypted link between a device and a server. While various free services exist, such as Proton VPN, PrivadoVPN, and Avira Phantom VPN, they often come with limitations regarding speed, data traffic, and available servers. Users are cautioned that free VPNs from untrusted sources may track activity for advertising purposes.
Regarding cybersecurity, a VPN is not a complete defense against phishing attacks. It cannot prevent users from entering credentials into fraudulent websites or falling victim to social engineering via email or messaging apps. However, a VPN can improve security by masking IP addresses and, in some cases, blocking malicious domains. It is particularly useful when using public Wi-Fi networks to prevent intruders from intercepting data. For comprehensive protection, a VPN should be used alongside antivirus software and cautious browsing habits.
