VPN technology: Enhancing data privacy and network routing

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) function by creating an encrypted tunnel between a user's device and the internet. Instead of sending requests directly to a destination server via an Internet Service Provider (ISP), a VPN routes data through an intermediary server. This process masks the user's IP address and location, providing protection against data interception in open Wi-Fi networks and reducing the ability of ISPs to log browsing activity.

Beyond privacy and security, VPN technology is increasingly utilized to optimize network performance. For example, Surfshark has introduced FastTrack, a routing optimization technology designed to improve gaming experiences. Rather than following the shortest physical path, which may be subject to congestion or inefficient ISP routing, FastTrack analyzes various network routes to select the most efficient path. This can help reduce ping and latency while also allowing users to access regional game servers or early releases from different geographic locations.
