Germany to launch ASA emergency warning system for digital radio
Germany is preparing to launch a new emergency warning system for digital radio (DAB+) called Automatic Safety Alert (ASA). Scheduled to begin in September under the service label ‘ASA DE’, the system is designed to provide reliable disaster notifications even if internet services, mobile networks, or cell broadcasts fail.
Technical infrastructure managed by Media Broadcast will receive emergency alerts from the federal Modular Warning System (MoWaS). These alerts will be converted from text to speech and broadcast via the national ‘DR Deutschland’ ensemble on channel 5C. A key feature of ASA is its ability to automatically wake compatible digital radios from standby mode to broadcast urgent information.
Digitalradio Deutschland e. V. has confirmed that over 35 radio models are already ASA-certified. Users can test the functionality at home by entering a specific nationwide test code (1253-3513-3668) to ensure their device correctly receives signals from the ‘Dokumente und Debatten’ channel. Following a successful test, users must enter their specific location code to receive localized regional warnings.
