VRAM technology explained: Function and importance in PCs

VRAM, or Video Random Access Memory, is specialized high-speed storage soldered directly to a graphics card. It functions as an ultra-fast cache for the GPU, storing essential visual data such as 3D models, shaders, and high-resolution textures to ensure smooth image rendering without relying on slower storage drives.

There is a significant distinction between integrated and dedicated graphics. Integrated GPUs, built into the CPU, lack physical memory chips and must borrow from the system's RAM. This can create bottlenecks because system RAM is slower than VRAM and reduces the total memory available for the operating system and other applications. In contrast, dedicated graphics cards feature their own high-bandwidth memory, making them essential for demanding tasks like AAA gaming or 3D design.
