Vrancea documents reveal Securitate recruitment of students

Historical documents from Vrancea County reveal how the Securitate, the communist-era secret police in Romania, systematically recruited students to act as informants. This process involved ideological indoctrination that began as early as age four, progressing through stages such as the ‘hawks of the fatherland,’ Pioneers, and eventually full party members.

To facilitate the recruitment of children as informants, the Securitate relied on the cooperation of educational staff, including school directors and class teachers. This practice turned schools into environments of ideological struggle, where children were encouraged to report on classmates and teachers, fostering a culture of fear and mistrust instead of free thought.
