Vrancea seismic zone experiences series of earthquakes

The Vrancea seismic zone in Romania experienced a series of earthquakes over the weekend of October 3-4, 2026. According to the National Institute for Earth Physics (INCDFP), four tremors were recorded within a 24-hour period.

On Sunday morning, October 4, two successive earthquakes occurred approximately 20 minutes apart. The first, at 05:45, had a magnitude of 2.5 at a depth of 108.1 km in Vrancea County. The second, at 06:05, reached a magnitude of 3.1 at a depth of 114.6 km in Buzău County.

These followed two earthquakes recorded on Saturday, October 3. The first occurred at 02:41 with a magnitude of 2.9 at a depth of 136.9 km, followed by a stronger 3.5 magnitude tremor at 04:22 at a depth of 140.9 km in Buzău County. No material damage or casualties have been reported from these recent events.
