Vranje students welcomed during bicycle tour amid Serbian political shifts
Students participating in the ‘Guardians of the Constitution’ bicycle tour were met with music and torches in Vranje, Serbia. The tour is organized by the Student List as part of pre-election activities for the parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25.
The students have been conducting protests for over a year, demanding accountability following the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad. During the welcome in Vranje, the song ‘Cela Vranje’—a Serbian adaptation of Blagica Pavlovska’s ‘Cela Skopje’—was played frequently. A police cordon was deployed to separate the students from supporters of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
The event occurs amidst significant political shifts in Serbia. President Aleksandar Vučić has resigned from his position after nine years to campaign for the upcoming elections as the SNS candidate for Prime Minister. Ana Brnabić has assumed the role of acting president.
