VRChat updates creator guidelines to address generative AI concerns

VRChat Inc. has updated its creator guidelines in response to growing community concerns regarding the influx of generative AI content on the platform. Users have expressed frustration that the rise of AI-generated worlds and images is harming content discoverability and flooding the platform with low-quality material, making it harder for high-quality, human-made creations to be found.

The new policy explicitly prohibits the use of AI to generate misleading maps or character thumbnails designed to deceive players into clicking. While the company acknowledges that AI can improve developer efficiency, it notes that the technology has lowered the barrier for mass-producing low-quality content.

Regarding the implementation of “AI labels” to help users identify synthetic content, VRChat stated that internal teams have not yet reached a consensus. While the company remains open to the idea, no formal commitment has been made. Additionally, VRChat plans to introduce more direct content feedback mechanisms to help improve its recommendation system and filter out undesirable content.
