Vrindavan artisans prepare Krishna costumes for Janmashtami

In preparation for the Janmashtami festival, artisans in Vrindavan and Mathura are working at peak capacity to create elaborate costumes, ornaments, and crowns for Lord Krishna. The production of these colorful garments, which are popular both in India and internationally, serves as a notable example of communal harmony, as approximately 80 percent of the skilled artisans crafting these items are Muslim.

These handcrafted outfits range significantly in price, from 10 rupees to several lakhs. Due to high seasonal demand, many artisans work shifts of 14 to 16 hours. This year, designs feature intricate work with pearls and stones.

In addition to professional craftsmanship, there is a high consumer demand for children's Krishna costumes. Various budget-friendly options, such as cotton kurta-dhoti sets and complete fancy dress kits including crowns and flutes, are widely available for families looking to dress children for the festivities.
