Vrindavan Gurukulam: 4 students die from suspected toxic gas in water tank
Four students died and one was injured after being exposed to suspected toxic gas while cleaning an underground water tank at the Maharishi Panini Sanskrit Gurukulam in Vrindavan, Mathura district.
The incident occurred on a Tuesday night when students noticed a foul odor coming from a submersible tank, which is approximately 12 to 14 feet deep. After using a motor to drain some water, students entered the tank to clean the remaining sludge. One student collapsed due to suspected gas exposure, and four others subsequently entered the tank in an attempt to rescue him, resulting in all five becoming unconscious.
The deceased students, aged between 17 and 20, have been identified as Manu Katare, Devansh Sharma, Aryan Pandey, and Vishu Sharma. A fifth student, Rudra, survived and is receiving medical treatment.
District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh stated that the Gurukulam is operated by Ashish Kumar Sharma and has approximately 200 enrolled students. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the circumstances of the accident, the school's recognition, and safety procedures. Authorities also plan to audit other gurukulams in the area.
