VRT confirms Belgium's participation in Eurovision 2027
Flemish broadcaster VRT has confirmed Belgium’s participation in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, which is scheduled to be held in Bulgaria. The decision comes after VRT previously hesitated to commit, citing concerns regarding the contest’s direction and the geopolitical tensions surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict.
VRT stated that its participation is an effort to work within the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to restore the contest’s values of “solidarity, mutual understanding and the aspiration for peace.” The broadcaster emphasized that participating does not constitute an endorsement of current global conflicts. Due to time constraints, VRT will select a candidate internally rather than organizing a preliminary round.
Maëlle Moquet, a runner-up from the recent season of The Voice van Vlaanderen, has expressed interest in representing the country. Her management confirmed she is open to the opportunity, noting that participating in Eurovision has been a lifelong dream for the singer. Maëlle previously worked on potential Eurovision songs with Dutch artist Joost Klein.
