Várzea Grande expands public policies and emergency measures after June fire

The municipality of Várzea Grande in Brazil announced several initiatives in June 2026. The city made equotherapy a permanent public policy, guaranteeing ongoing therapeutic services for people with disabilities. After a fire destroyed an education‑secretariat warehouse on 17 June, the mayor declared a 180‑day state of administrative calamity, enabling emergency measures such as staff redeployment, temporary facilities and rapid procurement. A special commission was created to inventory damaged school materials and propose their redistribution within 45 days. The city also launched the “Acelera VG água” program, opening a public consultation on the updated Municipal Sanitation Plan and inviting comments ahead of an August hearing. Additional actions included a child‑labour awareness campaign during the June PETI week, a city‑wide maintenance and cleaning drive under the VG em Ação program, and a workshop to start the new 2026‑2036 Municipal Education Plan. Water service crews repaired a broken water main in the São Simão district, restoring supply to several neighborhoods.
