Várzea Grande celebrates 159th anniversary with month‑long citywide events

The municipality of Várzea Grande in Brazil launched a month‑long program to mark its 159th anniversary, scheduling a series of inaugurations, program launches, cultural shows, sports activities and social actions across the city through the end of May. Highlights include the opening of a Center for Women’s Co‑existence, the inauguration of a Women and Vulnerable Groups Police Station, training for the municipal guard, the Qualifica Várzea Grande qualification program, a civic‑military parade, and the reopening of health and education facilities.

As part of the festivities, the EMEB Paulo Freire school hosted a cultural morning with writer Flávio Ferreira and regional singer‑songwriter Pescuma. Ferreira presented his book “Histórias da Vovó do Coxipó” and signed copies, while Pescuma performed traditional Mato‑grosso songs, reinforcing the city’s effort to promote regional heritage among students.

Both events were attended by local officials, including mayor Flávia Moretti, and underscored Várzea Grande’s focus on community engagement, cultural preservation and public service improvements during the anniversary celebrations.
