Várzea Grande doctor warns of silent progression of cervical cancer

Dr. Gabrielle Chaves, based at the Cohab Cristo Rei Health Unit in Várzea Grande, is warning that cervical cancer can develop silently without initial symptoms. She emphasizes the critical importance of regular preventive screenings, such as the Pap smear (Papanicolau or CCO), to identify cellular changes before they progress into serious disease.

Many pre-cancerous lesions do not cause noticeable pain or bleeding, meaning women may not realize they are ill until the disease has advanced. Dr. Chaves notes that timely identification allows for the treatment of precursor lesions, whereas late-stage diagnosis often requires more complex interventions, including surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy.
