Várzea Grande municipal building fire ruled accidental, no criminal origin

A fire erupted on 17 June in the municipal education logistics building in Várzea Grande, Brazil, damaging the structure and nearby vehicles. The Perícia Oficial e Identificação Técnica (Politec) conducted forensic examinations, reviewing fire‑scene evidence, security‑camera footage and witness statements. The investigation concluded that the blaze originated from a thermoelectric phenomenon in the wiring atop a frozen‑food cold chamber, likely due to overload, short‑circuit or continuous discharge.

Politec officials, including criminal expert Augusto César de Figueiredo, noted that the exact trigger could not be pinpointed but ruled out any criminal cause. Drones were used for external and aerial inspection of the collapsed area. The building has been released to the Civil Police, and a detailed pericial report describing the fire dynamics and damage will be issued within 30 days.

The incident caused extensive material loss, with fire spreading quickly to the building’s two halves and to two vehicles parked nearby, which amplified the thermal load. No injuries were reported, and the investigation focused on safety and reconstruction measures.
