Várzea Grande health officials promote mental health awareness

In observance of Setembro Amarelo, the Várzea Grande Municipal Health Secretariat is highlighting the importance of recognizing signs of intense emotional suffering. Psychiatrist Jayme Benevides notes that requests for help often manifest through subtle behavioral changes rather than direct statements.

Key warning signs include social isolation, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, intense discouragement, changes in sleep or appetite, and sudden mood swings. Specific verbal cues such as “I want to disappear” or “no one will miss me” should be taken seriously. Additionally, social media posts expressing hopelessness or farewells are critical indicators.

To assist those in distress, experts recommend three primary actions: listening without immediate judgment, maintaining a supportive presence, and helping the individual seek professional psychological or psychiatric care. In cases of immediate risk, emergency services should be contacted and the person should not be left alone.
