Várzea Grande hospital emergency department closes temporarily due to overcrowding

For the first time during Mayor Flávia Moretti's administration, the Municipal Hospital and Emergency Department in Várzea Grande was forced to halt admission of new patients for 24 hours because its capacity was exhausted. The restriction, formalized in Official Letter No. 98/2026 and signed by medical director José Mario Podanosque, applied to the Clinical Medicine and Trauma Box units, which had reached maximum occupancy. Critical care areas such as the Red Room, Yellow Room and Trauma Box were operating at full capacity, leaving severely ill patients in stabilization zones awaiting beds or transfer.

The temporary suspension was communicated to the State Regulation Center, SAMU, the fire department, the local ambulance contractor Nova Rota do Oeste and other emergency agencies. Authorities said the measure was necessary to prevent a total collapse of services and to protect patients already in the facility. The incident highlights growing pressure on the city’s public‑health system and underscores the need for expanded capacity and structural solutions.
