Várzea Grande Hospital Renovation Awaits Legislative Funding

The Municipal Hospital and Emergency Center in Várzea Grande, Mato Grosso, is undergoing a major renovation funded by a state allocation of R$ 11.7 million, of which R$ 5.7 million has already been spent. Completed work includes rebuilding 98% of the roof covering roughly 8,000 m², refurbishing 14 bathrooms, renovating staff locker rooms, upgrading the technological infrastructure, installing two generator sets and reorganising the administrative area.

The next phase, pending approval of a budget supplement by the city council, aims to replace the entire electrical system, refurbish an additional 45 bathrooms, close the side openings of the roof, finish the administrative block and acquire three more generator units, bringing the total to five for full energy autonomy. Hospital director Michael Alves said, “With the release of the resources, we will continue the complete replacement of the unit’s electrical network, the renovation of more bathrooms, the closure of the roof sides, the completion of the administrative area and the acquisition of three more generators.” Health secretary Valéria Nogueira called the project “one of the largest structural interventions ever carried out in the unit” and stressed its importance for thousands of monthly patients from Várzea Grande and surrounding municipalities in Mato Grosso and Rondônia. The lack of legislative approval delays further improvements, affecting patient comfort, safety and service quality.
