Várzea Grande Mayor Flávia Moretti Confronts Inherited Debt and PL Party Conflict

Flávia Moretti, mayor of Várzea Grande in Brazil's Mato Grosso state, said she inherited a fiscal burden from former mayor Kalil Baracat, including roughly R$22 million in unpaid court‑ordered precatórios and R$19 million in INSS contributions. The Mato Grosso State Court (TJMT) ordered the municipality’s accounts blocked and referred the case to the state Public Ministry and Court of Auditors for a possible improbity investigation involving the mayor.

In a separate press briefing, Moretti disputed claims by Ananias Filho, president of the state Liberal Party (PL), that the party had financially and politically supported her administration. She asked Filho to produce documentation proving her role as president of the PL Mulher chapter in Várzea Grande and emphasized that federal legislators, not the state party, secured parliamentary amendments for the city. The statements followed the signing of a “Aliança pela Água” agreement and ongoing criticism of her management of the municipal debt crisis.
