Singapore strengthens semiconductor ecosystem with new national brand and VSMC fab opening

Singapore is significantly expanding its semiconductor footprint through two major developments. First, the government has launched the “SG Semiconductor” national brand, supported by the S$800 million Research, Innovation, and Enterprise 2030 (RIE2030) Semiconductor Flagship Program. This initiative aims to integrate research, manufacturing, and industry across seven key technology areas, including advanced packaging and silicon photonics, to strengthen the nation's role in the global supply chain.

Simultaneously, VisionPower Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (VSMC)—a joint venture between NXP Semiconductors and Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS)—has officially opened its first 300mm wafer fabrication plant in Tampines, Singapore. The facility, which was constructed in approximately 22 months, has already entered the risk production stage, reporting initial sample yields of over 99%.

The new fab focuses on specialty process technologies ranging from 130nm to 40nm, targeting markets such as automotive, industrial, and high-performance computing. Notably, the plant's initial capacity is already fully committed to customers. VSMC plans to begin volume production in the first quarter of 2027 and aims to reach a monthly capacity of 44,000 wafers by 2029. Due to high demand, the company is already evaluating the possibility of constructing a second facility.
