Výtoň Bridge to undergo carbon fiber reinforcement

The Czech railway administration, Správa železnic, will begin a six-week project to reinforce the steel structure of the Výtoň railway bridge over the Vltava River. To stabilize the most heavily stressed areas, workers will clean selected parts of the steel construction and bond specialized carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips directly to the surface.

This reinforcement method is intended to maintain current limited rail operations until at least 2028 without requiring extensive new steel additions. Currently, the bridge is subject to significant restrictions, allowing only one train at a time with a maximum speed of 20 kilometers per hour. The bridge serves critical routes for commuter and long-distance trains traveling toward Beroun, Plzeň, and Bavaria.

The work will be conducted under the supervision of experts from the Department of Steel Structures at the Czech Technical University (ČVUT). While rail traffic is not expected to face additional restrictions beyond existing limits, pedestrians may experience partial limitations on the footpaths. A final decision regarding the long-term future of the historic bridge is expected later this year.
