VUB research disputes claims of declining scientific innovation

New research from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and KU Leuven challenges previous claims that scientific innovation is declining. A 2023 study published in the journal Nature had suggested that the disruptive nature of research had dropped sharply since the mid-20th century, a finding that influenced global science policy and funding discussions.

The VUB-led team discovered that the original conclusion was largely driven by errors in scientific databases. Incomplete data in older publications led to missing references, causing them to be incorrectly classified as more groundbreaking than they were. This created a distorted perception of a decline in recent innovation.

Professor Vincent Ginis of VUB stated that once these data errors are corrected, “almost the entire decline reported in the original study disappears.” While the researchers noted this does not prove science is becoming more groundbreaking, they emphasized that the previous claims lack a reliable evidentiary basis.
