Vueling delays Boeing 737 MAX entry into service

Vueling, the Barcelona-based low-cost subsidiary of International Airlines Group (IAG), has delayed the entry of its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft into service. The introduction of the new fleet is now expected to occur during the first half of 2027.

The delay is attributed to a protracted certification process for RECARO passenger seats intended for the aircraft, rather than issues with the Boeing airframes themselves. Vueling confirmed it is in discussions with RECARO to resolve the matter, though the process is expected to take several months.

This transition marks a significant shift for Vueling, which has exclusively operated Airbus A320 family aircraft to date. The airline is expected to move toward a Boeing fleet over several years. The initial aircraft slated for service are the 737 MAX 8-200 model, featuring a 197-seat configuration. The airline's original plan to launch commercial flights on the Barcelona to Alicante route in December 2026 is no longer feasible.
