Vuelta a España: Skjelmose launches GC raid during Stage 13

During Stage 13 of the 2026 Vuelta a España, Mattias Skjelmose attempted a general classification raid by joining a large 43-rider breakaway. Skjelmose, who started the day in seventh place, sought to close the 7:42 gap to the red jersey, Enric Mas.

Oscar Onley, the INEOS leader currently holding the white jersey, expressed caution regarding Skjelmose’s move, noting that riders do not want to ‘give him time for free.’ Onley suggested that Skjelmose’s presence in the break made him an unlikely partner for other riders, which helped the peloton eventually reduce the gap.

Onley also reported experiencing physical discomfort similar to the pains from a recent crash, though he expressed hope for better performance in the upcoming mountain stages. Meanwhile, the race continues under high temperatures, with forecasts reaching 37-38 degrees Celsius.
