Vukovar to build Veterans Center on former school site

The Vukovar City Council has decided to donate a construction plot, originally intended for an unfinished economics school, to the Republic of Croatia and the Ministry of Croatian Veterans. The land will be used to build a Veterans Center in Vukovar designed to accommodate elderly Croatian veterans.

Mayor Marijan Pavliček stated that the previous economics school project, initiated under former Mayor Ivan Penava, was never completed and left the city with significant debts. The city still owes approximately 470,000 euros related to that failed project.

The decision addresses the growing needs of an aging veteran population and relieves pressure on local elderly care facilities. Currently, the Mitnica home for the elderly has 108 users, while approximately 700 residents of Vukovar remain on waiting lists, including about 100 veterans. If construction proceeds according to current plans, the new center could be operational within two to three years.
