Vulcan Mozambique expands operations and increases local workforce to 97%

Vulcan Mozambique has significantly expanded its operational capacity from 20 million to 48 million tonnes per year since 2022. The mining company has also increased its local workforce participation, with Mozambican citizens now making up 97% of its 21,000 employees, alongside workers from neighboring Malawi.

To support this growth, the company is developing a 300-megawatt waste-to-energy power plant. This project aims to utilize mineral coal and mining waste to produce electricity and drive industrialization. To manage this infrastructure, Vulcan has launched a training program for approximately 2,000 local workers, which includes theoretical training and practical internships in thermal plants in India to ensure technical autonomy.

CEO Mukesh Kumar noted that while international coal prices have fluctuated—with metallurgical coal dropping from highs of over $400 in 2022/2023 to recent levels between $220 and $250—the company views local value addition as a strategic necessity to mitigate transport costs and commodity volatility.
