Vusimuzi Matlala trial addresses police brutality and assassination allegations

The trial of Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and four co-accused continues at the Johannesburg High Court, involving 25 counts related to alleged botched assassination attempts and money laundering. The case involves high-profile targets, including socialite Tebogo Thobejane, businessman Joe Sibanyoni, and music producer Seunkie Mokubung.

A significant legal dispute, described as a “trial within a trial,” is currently addressing the admissibility of evidence. Alleged hitman Musa Kekana has challenged the circumstances of his arrest, claiming he was assaulted and suffocated by police. He further alleges he was prematurely discharged from the hospital due to pressure from a former police station commander.

The prosecution expects to call key witnesses, including an investigating officer and a former commander of the Bramley police station, to provide their versions of events. State prosecutor Elize Le Roux has indicated confidence in the proceedings, despite defense challenges regarding the legality of the evidence gathered during the arrests.
