Väylävirasto denies passenger rail readiness for Turku–Uusikaupunki line

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (Väylävirasto) has clarified that the Turku–Uusikaupunki railway line is currently unfit for passenger traffic due to poor track conditions. Approximately 32 kilometers of the 65-kilometer stretch suffer from unstable ground and soft soil, posing risks if train frequency increases.

While current freight traffic is relatively low, the agency warns that introducing passenger services would significantly increase the number of trains, heightening the risk of structural failure or trains stopping on unstable sections. To enable passenger services between Turku and Raisio, essential repairs are required, including the replacement of the Raisionjoki bridge and addressing critical stability issues.

A minimum solution is estimated to cost 10 million euros and take approximately two years to complete following funding approval. However, the agency notes that the overall track structures are reaching the end of their lifespan, and a more comprehensive 25 million euro renovation has been proposed to address long-term degradation.
