W. A. Bean & Sons updates Maine Red Snapper recipe with natural dye
W. A. Bean & Sons, the only wholesale hot dog manufacturer in Maine, has released a reformulated recipe for its signature Maine Red Snappers. The update replaces artificial coloring with all-natural dye to comply with upcoming federal food safety regulations.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the USDA have announced a nationwide ban on Red Dye No. 3 in the food supply due to health concerns, setting a compliance deadline of January 15, 2027. W. A. Bean & Sons began its reformulation strategy in 2022, several years ahead of the mandate.
The company will use carmine extract, a natural coloring agent derived from cochineal insects, to maintain the product’s iconic color. While the natural dye is more expensive, the company stated it intends to keep the current price stable. The updated hot dogs are available at the company’s retail store in Bangor and are rolling out to local grocery stores across Maine.
