Waabi achieves milestone with untrained autonomous highway truck run

Toronto-based Waabi has announced a milestone in autonomous trucking, successfully completing a 300-mile highway test run from Dallas to San Antonio without prior route-specific training. Unlike traditional autonomous systems that rely on extensive high-definition mapping and simulations of specific routes, Waabi’s AI-enabled trucks demonstrated the ability to navigate unfamiliar terrain using generalized intelligence.

During the four-and-a-half-hour test, which averaged speeds of approximately 60 miles per hour, the vehicle required no interventions from the safety driver. CEO Raquel Urtasun stated that the truck was able to drive “perfectly, confidently, safely, with no interventions for the entirety, without ever seeing that lane before.” The company aims to begin commercial robotruck operations next year, potentially offering a scalable advantage over competitors who rely on pre-mapped routes.
