Wacken Open Air holds premiere festival in Japan
The Wacken Open Air (WOA) heavy metal festival is expanding to Japan with its first event held in Yokohama. Unlike the traditional German festival held in the fields of Schleswig-Holstein, which is known for mud and camping, this Japanese iteration features an indoor concept with seating.
Organizers designed the Yokohama event to cater to an older demographic that prefers listening attentively to the music rather than the high-energy, physical dancing typical of the original festival. The expansion follows Japan's long-standing interest in the genre, supported by a large number of metal bands and the popularity of related styles like Visual Kei and Babymetal.
