Wacken Open Air readies 2026 festival, founder insights and revised stage floor plans

The Wacken Open Air metal festival, set to take place from July 29 to August 1 2026 north of Hamburg, reflects on its origins and recent logistical changes. Founders Holger Hübner and Thomas Jensen recount how, 36 years ago, they launched the event without a business plan or financial expertise, growing it from 167 attendees in 1993 to one of the world’s largest metal gatherings. Their firm stance on independent ticketing and rejection of dynamic pricing remains, even as the festival’s ownership shifted: the Superstruct Entertainment group, backed by private‑equity firm KKR, now holds a 60 % stake.

Ahead of the 2026 edition, festival CEO Andre Jürgens announced that the previously planned concrete floor plates in front of the Faster and Harder stages will not be installed. To avoid water pooling after rain, the plates will instead be doubled and positioned around beverage and food stalls, the periphery, and other high‑traffic areas. The update also mentioned added seating and sun‑protection measures, underscoring the organizers’ focus on attendee comfort and infrastructure resilience.
