Wadden Sea visitors face strict rules in German National Parks

Visitors to the German Wadden Sea must adhere to strict regulations to protect the UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. The area, which spans national parks in Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, and Lower Saxony, is divided into specific protection zones.

Zone 1 serves as a quiet area for seals and birds and is largely off-limits to pedestrians. In other areas, visitors must follow designated paths and guided tours to avoid disturbing wildlife. Specific prohibitions include keeping dogs on leashes and banning activities such as riding, camping, and fireworks. Violating these rules, particularly regarding the disturbance or capture of animals, can result in significant fines.

The Lower Saxony Wadden Sea is Germany’s most visited national park, seeing approximately 22 million visitor days annually.
