Waddenzee World Heritage Centre postpones bankruptcy filing

The Waddenzee World Heritage Centre (WEC), also known as the Seal Centre Pieterburen, has postponed its planned bankruptcy filing by one week. The board and supervisory board intend to use this additional time to investigate potential solutions to ensure the center's continued existence.

The decision follows significant public support, including €1.25 million in donations and a petition signed by over 100,000 people. The center's financial crisis was triggered by unexpected construction and operational costs associated with its new location, compounded by the withdrawal of financial support from the Province of Groningen and the Municipality of Het Hogeland.

Ongoing discussions are taking place with various stakeholders, including government bodies, funds, and parties from the Lauwersoog harbor regarding potential cooperation. The center is also in talks with creditors to reach an agreement on outstanding obligations. A final decision on whether sufficient prospects for continuity exist will be made on October 30.
