Wade Mark breaks Senate deadlock and receives national honor
Senate President Wade Mark has broken a 15-15 deadlock in the Upper House by exercising his casting vote to pass the government’s Special Operations Bill. The vote saw 15 government senators in favor, while six opposition and nine independent senators rejected the legislation. Mark stated he had researched his authority to exercise the casting vote and declared the final tally 16 to 15. The decision prompted immediate objections from the opposition, including Senator Faris Al-Rawi, but Mark ruled the vote concluded and declined further discussion.
In a separate development, Mark was honored at the 2026 Republic Day National Awards Ceremony with the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT), the nation’s highest award for distinguished service. Mark, whose parliamentary career spans over three decades including roles as Speaker of the House and Minister of Public Administration and Information, dedicated the honor to grassroots citizens. He was joined by other recipients, including Chief Justice Ronnie Boodoosingh and former minister Dr. Surujrattan Rambachan.
