Germany views Trump's G20 invitation to Putin as negotiation opportunity
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has characterized Donald Trump's invitation to Vladimir Putin for the G20 summit in Miami this December as a potential ‘opportunity’ to initiate serious negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine.
Speaking in Ottawa alongside Canadian Minister Anita Anand, Wadephul emphasized that while Germany seeks an end to Russia's illegal war, any meaningful dialogue requires a functioning ceasefire. He described the upcoming summit as a ‘litmus test’ for whether the Russian President is truly prepared to negotiate.
This diplomatic stance comes amid heightened tensions. Wadephul recently held an unexpected 30-minute meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the United Nations. During this encounter, Wadephul condemned a recent drone attack in Leipzig as an ‘unacceptable escalation’ and warned Russia against continuing a ‘dangerous path.’ In response to recent tensions, Germany has closed its consulate in Bonn and implemented targeted sanctions against Russian officials, while Russia has closed the German consulate in Saint Petersburg.
