Wadeye police crackdown leads to 13 arrests amid unrest

Police have arrested 13 individuals following a crackdown on ongoing unrest in the remote community of Wadeye, located approximately 395km southwest of Darwin. The group, consisting of ten men and three women aged 19 to 45, has been remanded in custody.

The arrests follow weeks of violence and disruption in the township that began in early August. Authorities have charged the individuals with more than 50 offences, including arson, rioting, theft, going armed in public, and recklessly endangering life. Reported incidents include the use of weapons, deliberate fires, aggravated burglaries, and damage to homes and vehicles.

Superintendent Virginia Read stated that a small group of people has been causing fear and disruption, placing residents and officers at risk. An increased police presence will remain in Wadeye to prevent further violence and identify additional offenders. Police indicated that more arrests are expected as other people of interest have been identified.
