Wadi Rum: Jordan's geological and cultural heritage site

Wadi Rum, located in southern Jordan near Aqaba, is a unique geological and cultural landscape composed of sandstone and granite. Recognized by UNESCO in 2011 as a mixed natural and cultural heritage site, the area features a desert relief characterized by narrow canyons, high cliffs, natural arches, and caves.

The region's geology is shaped by Precambrian granitoid rocks and early sandstones, with visible layers, faults, and erosion patterns. Beyond its physical landscape, Wadi Rum contains significant archaeological traces, including petroglyphs and inscriptions that date back approximately 12,000 years, reflecting Nabataean presence and Bedouin culture.
