Waechter Architecture's Dune House Opens on Oregon Coast

The Dune House, a new residence on the northern Oregon Coast, was designed by Portland‑based Waechter Architecture. The home draws on local building traditions, using weathering cedar shingles that age with the coastal environment and an interior of white oak flooring and paneling. A central skylit courtyard organizes the layout, linking two private bedroom suites, a kitchen and dining alcove, and shared living spaces while admitting deep daylight. Large openings frame views of the surrounding dunes and tidal flats, creating a calm, monolithic presence that blends with the landscape. The project is presented as a modern reinterpretation of the classic shingled beach cottage, emphasizing restraint, material clarity and a meditative retreat from everyday distractions.
