Wafa Heboul challenges Moroccan gender norms through action sports

Wafa Heboul, a Moroccan skater, surfer, and entrepreneur, is challenging traditional gender norms through her involvement in action sports. Born in Agadir and later moving to the surf and skate hub of Taghazout, Heboul began her journey two decades ago as the only girl at her local skate park.

Initially, her family expressed concern regarding the physical risks of skateboarding, but her persistence and success in local competitions and Olympic qualifiers eventually earned their support. Heboul has become a figure for breaking stereotypes regarding Moroccan women in sports, using surfing and skating as vital forms of self-expression.
