Waffle House closures signal impact of Hurricane Isaias
Hurricane Isaias, the first hurricane of the 2026 season, has caused significant disruption along the U.S. Gulf Coast. After making landfall near Destin, Florida, the storm weakened into a post-tropical cyclone, but previously triggered Category 3 warnings for Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi.
The impact of the storm is being tracked via the ‘Waffle House Index,’ a shorthand used to gauge the severity of weather disruptions based on the restaurant chain’s operational status. As of October 10, 2026, at least 91 Waffle House locations have closed, with 67 of those lacking power. Additionally, 17 restaurants are operating with limited menus or services.
A company spokesperson stated that locations will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so. While the majority of the chain's 1,166 U.S. locations remain open, the closures in the Mobile Bay region and the Florida Panhandle serve as indicators of the storm's impact on local infrastructure and daily life.
