Wageningen University students investigate mysterious sand pits

Biology students from Wageningen University, Belle Swanenberg and Tom Knols, have been investigating the origin of mysterious, uniform pits discovered in the drying sands near Oostvoorne. While researchers initially hypothesized that foraging stingrays might be responsible, the students' study of 182 pits revealed inconsistent sand patterns that do not align with a single species' behavior.

To identify the cause, the researchers utilized drones and underwater camera traps baited with crabs and anchovies, analyzing 26 hours of footage to search for evidence of the pit-makers.
