Wagga Wagga City Council approves land sale to CDC Data Centres
Wagga Wagga City Council has resolved to proceed with the sale of land at 232 Ashfords Road, Gregadoo, to Canberra-based CDC Data Centres. The site, originally acquired in November 2024 for future waste management purposes using Transgrid funding, is now slated for a massive data centre campus.
The proposed project would cover approximately 63 hectares and include four buildings totaling 189,000 square metres of floor space. The facility is expected to have a potential electricity demand of 1.4 gigawatts and will include 384 backup diesel generators with 6,400 tonnes of diesel storage. The site's proximity to major transmission infrastructure, such as the Wagga 330-kilovolt substation, was a key factor in the proposal.
In exchange for the sale, the council has stipulated that CDC Data Centres must provide community benefits valued at a minimum of $150 million over the project's lifespan, with an additional $75 million proposed for local initiatives, totaling $225 million in potential benefits. While the sale moves forward, the council is continuing a master planning process for the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre to ensure the city's long-term waste infrastructure needs are still met.
