Wagga Wagga City Council has begun issuing $110 fines to homeless individuals residing in Wilks Park who have refused to engage with available housing pathways. On Monday, August 31, at least three people, including a disabled pensioner living in a bus, were fined for failing to comply with council notices.

Council General Manager Peter Thompson stated that the regulatory action is a final step in a process that has already successfully rehomed or found alternative accommodation for more than 20 people. Thompson clarified that fines are reserved for those who do not engage with Homes NSW, noting that individuals who do cooperate with housing services are not being penalized.

Housing advocates have criticized the move, arguing that the fines are distressing for people with no financial means to pay them. Advocates also noted that temporary hotel accommodation is often not a viable solution for rough sleepers who wish to avoid leaving their possessions behind.
