Wagner’s ‘Der fliegende Holländer’ receives new political and feminist interpretations
Recent productions of Richard Wagner’s opera ‘Der fliegende Holländer’ are exploring contemporary political and social themes. At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, director Milo Rau is set to premiere an interpretation on October 24 that aims to examine the political depths of Germany. The production is described as a ‘road movie through German culture and history after 1945,’ addressing topics ranging from Wagner’s antisemitism to modern German-Israeli relations and the implications of loving Wagner following the Shoah.
In Vienna, director Philipp Stölzl has brought a production to the Theater an der Wien that re-examines the character of Senta. Stölzl, who originally created this staging in the 2000s, focuses on addressing the ‘male gaze’ and unconscious bias inherent in the 150-year-old repertoire. The production seeks to reflect on power structures and provide a more feminist perspective on a narrative where the female protagonist traditionally sacrifices herself to redeem the male lead.
