Waikato leaders criticize government delay on Head Start proposals
Local leaders in the Waikato region have expressed frustration following the central government's decision to pause decision-making on Head Start proposals until after the upcoming general election.
Waipa Mayor Mike Pettit noted that councils were pressured to deliver proposals under tight deadlines, only to face a delay in the process. Waikato District Mayor Aksel Bech described the situation as a “hurry up and wait” scenario, stating that the council worked under an “impossible timeline” to submit a proposal that follows the Waikato River from Taupō to Port Waikato.
The proposal, which involved five councils, met central government eligibility criteria after significant community engagement, including 36 in-person events. While the delay has caused frustration and diverted resources from core council work, Mayor Bech suggested the pause might provide an opportunity to work toward more sensible timelines and collaborative approaches in the future.
