Wake County commissioners approve WakeMed and Atrium Health merger documents
The Wake County Board of Commissioners voted 5-2 to approve the legal documents necessary to advance the merger between WakeMed Health & Hospitals and Atrium Health. The deal, which still requires approval from the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice, includes a $2 billion commitment to local infrastructure and $150 million for community programs.
Proponents argue the merger will ensure WakeMed's long-term financial stability and expand healthcare access. WakeMed has already released renovation plans for its Raleigh campus, including a new tower and an expanded Children's Emergency Department.
However, the decision faced significant opposition. Critics, including some county commissioners and the NC Justice Center, expressed concerns regarding potential increases in healthcare costs and the loss of local control. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, who previously expressed reservations, noted that the proposal improved after requests to cap price increases at 1.5 times the annual Medicare rate.
