Wake County jails face overcrowding due to new legislation

Wake County, North Carolina, is facing significant jail overcrowding, with the Wake County jail holding more than 1,800 people in August despite a capacity of 1,574. Sheriff Willie Rowe attributed the increased population to the passage of Iryna's Law, which eliminates cashless bail for certain crimes and impacts pretrial release.

To manage the crisis, officials have converted multipurpose rooms into housing and transferred some inmates to other facilities. County leaders have allocated an additional $7 million to cover costs for deputies, medical personnel, meals, and portable beds. An annex is currently under renovation and is expected to reopen early next year, adding 240 beds, with long-term plans to increase total capacity to 2,400.

Legal experts note that the legislation may slow down cases by several months and disproportionately affects indigent defendants. Sheriff Rowe has suggested that law enforcement agencies consider using citations rather than arrests for non-violent offenses to help alleviate the strain.
